Anthropic paused new grants of a free year of Claude Team and $1,000 in API credits under its Claude Startups program after demand blew past capacity. In a FAQ answer still live on the program page as of October 9, 2026, the company said it “didn’t anticipate the demand”, received hundreds of thousands of applications over the past few days, and is currently over capacity on those two offers.

If you already claimed the Team year or the $1K credit, Anthropic says nothing changes—you can keep using the offer in your account. Everyone else’s applications are heading into a broader re-review.

What Anthropic says in the FAQ

The clearest primary source is Anthropic’s own FAQ on the Claude Startups page, under the question “Does the Startup Program still offer a free year of Claude Team and $1K in API Credits?” The company’s answer, quoted in substance:

  • Demand was higher than expected; applications numbered in the hundreds of thousands over recent days.
  • Claude Team and the $1,000 API credit offers are over capacity right now.
  • Already-claimed offers stay active in the account.
  • Anthropic is reshaping Claude Startups to be “of, by and for startup founders.”
  • It will re-review all applications, which may change the status of some applications—and it says it regrets that.
  • Existing members still get the Startup Stack, Applied AI office hours, and events.
  • If you are on a Claude Max or Team plan, monthly API credits remain available in Console as usual.

Anthropic’s @claudeai account said on Oct 9 that it “need[s] to pause the Claude Team and $1,000 API credit offers,” and Sarah Wolf, Anthropic’s head of startup marketing, said the program drew 21x as many applications in its first 48 hours as in the previous five months and that “many non-startups were accepted.”

The VC-partner track continues, with “up to $100K in additional API credits, claimed through your VC.”

That last point matters for paid subscribers: the pause is about the startup-program free Team year and one-time $1K credit, not about wiping ordinary Max/Team monthly credits in Console.

What the expanded offer looked like days earlier

On October 6, 2026, Anthropic published “We’re expanding the Claude Startups program to help founders build”. That expansion framed member benefits around:

  • A free year of Claude Team (up to five Premium seats for companies new to Team).
  • A one-time $1,000 API credit available on approval.
  • The Claude Startup Stack—partner discounts and credits Anthropic said were worth up to $45,000 from companies building with Claude.
  • Applied AI office hours, events, Marketplace help, and community access.

Anthropic valued the Claude products and credits portion at up to $7,000 in that article (annual Team seats plus the one-time credit), separate from the partner stack. The October 9 FAQ pause targets the free Team year and $1K API credit specifically; the FAQ says existing members keep Stack access and office hours/events.

Who is affected—and who is not

Already claimed: Keep the offer. Anthropic’s FAQ is explicit that claimed benefits remain usable in the account.

Approved but unclaimed, pending, or newly applying: Expect a re-review. Status may change. Secondary reporting such as RuntimeWire (Oct 9, 2026), citing notices shared by applicants, reported the same: some previously approved startups may not receive the Team/$1K offers after the re-review, while claimed benefits stay.

Existing members’ non-credit perks: Startup Stack, Applied AI office hours, and events continue per the FAQ.

Max/Team monthly API credits: Still available in Console as usual for those plans.

Why founders should treat the FAQ as the source of truth

Program pages and secondary threads move fast when a free offer goes viral. For this story, the durable facts are on claude.com/programs/startups: capacity was exceeded, claimed offers stay, applications will be re-reviewed, and Stack/office hours remain for existing members. The same FAQ still tells applicants to sign in to the Claude Console to apply and says Anthropic aims to review every application within one week—but that target sits alongside today’s capacity and re-review language.

For builders who already wired Claude into a prototype on the strength of a pending approval, the practical move is to check Console and email for status changes rather than assume a prior “approved” state still unlocks the free Team year or $1K credit.
