A sunlit oak table by a tall window overlooking a city skyline, with a smartphone with a blank dark screen, a white earbuds case and a cup of green tea, the headline APPLE INTELLIGENCE IS COMING TO CHINA, the orange subline With Qwen support, via iOS 27.3 in Dec., and the AIWithRahish badge in the bottom-right corner

Apple said on 31 October 2026 from Cupertino that the first batch of Apple Intelligence features is coming to users in China. The release appears only on Apple Newsroom (China) in Chinese; we found no English Apple Newsroom page. Apple says the wave runs on generative models it built, and that it partnered with Alibaba so Qwen (千问) can support parts of Siri, Writing Tools, and Visual Intelligence.

What Apple announced

Apple's headline in Chinese is Apple 智能即将登陆中国 (translation ours: Apple Intelligence is coming to China). Apple said the first core features deepen integration across daily apps—writing, expression, and productivity—driven by Apple-built generative models for translation, Writing Tools, Visual Intelligence, Clean Up, Genmoji, and related tools. It also announced an Alibaba partnership to embed Qwen in selected Apple Intelligence experiences, including text and image understanding in Siri, Writing Tools, and Visual Intelligence.

The timeline: Nov. 4 beta, December on iOS 27.3

Testing starts 4 Nov. on the latest iOS developer beta. Apple plans a user launch in China with the official iOS 27.3 release in December. Other platforms will follow after necessary approvals, without further detail in the release.

Where Qwen fits: Siri, Writing Tools, Visual Intelligence

For certain Siri requests, Apple said Siri can tap Qwen for knowledge—including questions about photos and documents such as PDFs and presentations—after sign-in with a Qwen account or Sign in with Apple. System-wide Writing Tools can use Qwen to compose original content from scratch. Visual Intelligence is part of the same Alibaba-backed text and image understanding scope. Apple did not publish pricing or data terms for Qwen access.

The first-wave iPhone feature list

Apple's release enumerates these capabilities on supported iPhones:

  • Live Translation in Messages, FaceTime, and Phone; in-person translation via AirPods 4 with active noise cancellation, AirPods Pro 2 and later
  • Writing Tools; Visual Intelligence; Clean Up, Genmoji, natural-language search, and Memory movies in Photos
  • Mail & Messages: Priority Messages, Mail summaries, Smart Reply
  • Notifications & Focus: notification summaries, prioritised notifications, Reduce Interruptions
  • Notes & calls: audio transcription summaries; call transcript summaries
  • Siri: Type to Siri with more natural dialogue; Qwen-backed requests where described above

Which iPhones qualify

Footnote 1 lists iPhone 16 and later, iPhone Duo, iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPhone Air on iOS 27.3, with Siri and device language set to English or Simplified Chinese. Visual Intelligence applies to all Apple Intelligence–enabled iPhones; some features may vary by language or region.

What's not included

Apple said this update excludes Siri AI and the other next-generation Apple Intelligence features announced at WWDC 2026.

What Apple didn't say

The release gives no pricing, Qwen data-sharing terms, regulatory steps, user numbers, or other-country plans. Apple did not map which Siri tasks use Qwen versus Apple models, or name iPad or Mac ship dates beyond post-approval platform support.

What it means

Analysis (ours). Wave one pairs Apple's own generative stack with a localized Qwen sign-in for knowledge and composition— a pragmatic split for China iPhones ahead of WWDC-tier Siri AI. The short beta runway from 4 Nov. to a December iOS 27.3 launch will surface integration bugs early. Product teams tracking Apple's broader AI surface—including Apple Adds AI Assistants and MCP to Pages, Keynote, Numbers—should treat China iPhone features as a partial slice of the global roadmap until Apple ships the WWDC 2026 tier.

What to watch

iOS developer beta stability from 4 Nov., December iOS 27.3 timing, Qwen and Sign in with Apple onboarding, and any Newsroom follow-ups on Siri AI or additional platforms after approvals.
