ChatGPT and Codex Will Share One Usage Limit in December

A sunlit home office desk with a closed silver laptop, a white keyboard, an open blank planner with a pencil and a glass of water, with the headline CHATGPT & CODEX SHARE ONE LIMIT in bold white, the orange subline Token-based usage from December, and the AIWithRahish badge in the bottom-right corner

OpenAI updated its Help Center guidance on how ChatGPT and Codex consume plan allowances, stating that starting in December, Plus, Pro, and Business plans will draw from a shared usage allowance across both products. The change aligns with OpenAI’s plan to bring the agentic capabilities of Work into the main ChatGPT experience. OpenAI has not published an exact switchover date or per-plan token amounts on that page.

What’s changing

OpenAI says that from December, the included allowance on Plus, Pro, and Business will be one pool for ChatGPT and Codex as agentic Work capabilities move into the main ChatGPT experience. OpenAI is preparing carefully to prevent disruption and expects most users won’t need to wait for their usage to reset more often than they do now. It has not published new token totals with the announcement.

What counts and what doesn’t

According to OpenAI, usage for ChatGPT and Codex will be measured in tokens, the units of information a model processes and generates. How much of your allowance a session consumes depends on the model you choose and the task you ask it to do; more advanced models and complex tasks generally use more of your allowance.

The notable exclusion is Instant chat, which OpenAI says will not draw from your usage. That leaves heavier chat modes, agentic Work flows, and Codex activity as the kinds of work most likely to move the shared meter once December arrives.

How token metering works

Longer prompts, larger outputs, and multi-step agent runs consume more tokens. OpenAI’s Work and Codex guide already states that allowance does not map to a fixed message count. For Plus and Standard Business, it publishes estimated local-message ranges per five-hour window (not fixed limits) (selected rows from OpenAI’s Help Center):

ModelPlus (est. local messages / 5 hr)Standard Business (est. local messages / 5 hr)
GPT-6 Astra5–455–45
GPT-6.1 Sol15–16015–160
GPT-6 Luna350–3,000350–3,000

OpenAI labels these as estimates that vary with task and settings—not guaranteed counts.

Where to check usage and what happens at the limit

OpenAI says you will see combined remaining usage and reset times in Settings → Usage. At the limit you can wait for reset, upgrade your plan, or buy credits for eligible features. On Plus and Pro, included usage is consumed first; credits then fund supported features such as Codex and ChatGPT Work under OpenAI’s credit terms.

What we still don’t know

OpenAI has not published an exact December switchover date, per-plan token allowances, or how current Chat message limits translate into tokens on the shared meter. Until it does, rely on Settings → Usage and Help Center updates—not third-party checkout rumors.

How it works today for Work and Codex

Work and Codex already share the plan allowance, with five-hour and weekly windows on some tiers; where both apply, you need allowance in both to continue. Pro 100, Pro 200, and Pro 500 currently have no five-hour limit in Work and Codex. Codex ships with eligible ChatGPT plans; API usage bills separately. Work auto-review safety checks are free and do not count toward limits.

What it means for developers and everyday users

Analysis. Developers already live inside shared Work/Codex windows; December extends that logic to ChatGPT on affected plans, so IDE agents and agentic chat compete for one meter. Everyday users keep lightweight traffic in Instant chat, while heavier models and Codex draw from the pool—similar to how credits already span Codex and Work on Plus and Pro. What to watch

Concrete token allowances, a firm December cutover time, and combined Usage readouts for ChatGPT plus Codex. Business admins should confirm seat-level rules; anyone near limits should review credits settings before the pool merges.
